Corn Refiners Association Statement on Recent Harvard University Study Finding An Apparent Correlation Between Consumption of Fructose and A Recently Discovered and Still Little Known Hormone

WASHINGTON, DC – “This study subjected individuals to unrealistically high levels of fructose that was consumed independent of glucose, which is just not how fructose is consumed in our daily diet. “In our natural diets, fructose and glucose are almost always consumed together, as they are with both sucrose (table sugar) and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), and are typically consumed in smaller amounts stretched out over the course of the day. “Even with this study being conducted in such an unrealistic setting, the authors acknowledge that little is known about the role of the recently discovered hormone in question, and they found that the hormone levels that may have been changed with the consumption of fructose were back to normal after a few hours. Therefore, any suggestion that this response carries any long-term consequences for human nutrition is unfounded and purely speculative. “While a lot of misguided speculation about fructose has been reported in the media lately, the reality is that current research shows moderate consumption of fructose-containing sweeteners like table sugar and HFCS in real world settings is safe and can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet. “The Corn Refiners Association has long been engaged in public dialogue that promotes a balanced lifestyle through caloric moderation and exercise.”
